«Tsvetaeva in 1910»
«It is very difficult for a person who loves Marina Tsvetaeva's work to talk about her biography. Brilliant poems and a life filled with tragic mistakes… Is there, in the midst of all this, the happiest, by her own admission, year?»
In 1910, Tsvetaeva's first poetry collection "Evening Album" was published, and at the same time she met the poet Maximilian Voloshin, whom she visited in Koktebel in March of the following year.
Tsvetaeva, in the creative atmosphere prevailing in the poet's house, transforms before our eyes, acquiring a fabulous, unearthly beauty.
Here, in Koktebel, Marina met a great love — Sergey Efron. They wandered along the shore of the Black Sea. Marina was collecting pebbles, and Sergei began to help her. And suddenly she decided: if a handsome young man finds a carnelian for her, she will definitely marry him. And so Sergei, without looking — because he was looking only at Marina, takes a pebble and hands it to her. And, of course, it was carnelian. Later, Tsvetaeva will insert this stone into a silver ring and will not part with it for the rest of her life.
This year continues for Marina with a journey through the Crimea — Old Crimea and Feodosia, the streets of which seem to lead to the fairy tales of Scheherazade. And then, together with Voloshin, they sailed by boat to the grotto in the cliff, which Maximilian called the entrance to Hades, to the Golden Gate and to the Carnelian Bay.
A little later in the letter Tsvetaeva will thank Voloshin with deep sincerity: "This summer was the best of all my adult years, and I owe it to you."
